The small town of Steubenville, Ohio sits on the banks of the Ohio River. This town is known as the “City of Murals,” as there are more than 20 murals throughout Steubenville which depict the town’s history. This history includes huge growth when the steel industry was booming, and a dramatic decline as the industry began to disappear in the 1960’s and 1970’s. The current population of Steubenville is about half what it was in the 1940’s. Many residents who remain struggle with poverty. However, Steubenville, and other towns like it in the “Rust Belt,” are beginning to see new signs of hope and revitalization.
