About the Navajo Nation

The Navajo Nation extends into four states: Arizona, New Mexico, Utah and a little bit of Colorado. The natural beauty of this area is unparalleled, with its deserts, forests, majestic mesas, mountains, painted deserts and canyons. It is 27,000 square miles, which is roughly the size of West Virginia. There are currently almost 300,000 Navajo throughout the US, 131,000 living in Arizona. The Navajo are historically nomadic people who settled in the southwest sometime in the fourteenth century. The government took control of their land in 1846 and since then they have had over 100 years of struggle. They traditionally call themselves the Diné, or “people” in Navajo. Although the Navajo people are strong and proud, their economy has struggled, leaving many tribal members without jobs and living in poverty. Their economy is based on sheep and cattle herding as well as weaving and jewelry making, and more recently coal and uranium mining. They are a listening culture that deeply values telling stories.

Serving in the Navajo Nation

• Serve through painting, cleaning, yard work or other simple work projects.
• Plan and lead kids programming for children in the community, including Bible lessons, games, crafts and reading.
• Students will have the opportunity to participate with each of the above service sites during the week.

Community Experience

Your group will have the opportunity to work with a local community garden, facilitate kids programming and help with work projects in the community. Each year our partnerships in this community grow stronger and stronger as we work alongside our community friends. Learn from these friends about Navajo culture, experience the beauty of the high deserts, see a traditional style Hogan with a Christian influence and much more during your week in Navajo Nation.

YouthWorks Relationship

YouthWorks has served alongside the Navajo Nation since 2001. Incredible relationships within this community have impacted our organization in meaningful ways. Although we house in Fort Defiance, our partnerships have expanded into the towns of Window Rock and St. Michaels.
