Nestled in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains halfway between Atlanta, GA and Charlotte, NC, Greenville is one of America’s fastest growing cities. With a rising population over 61,000, the city boasts the largest school district in the state, is home to a handful of theater companies and has several prominent museums. Previously known as the “Textile Capital of the World,” Greenville now has a more diverse collection of companies that headquarter in the city. Despite a strong economy, 15% of the population – and one out of every five children – live under the poverty line. Many organizations in the community are working toward multifaceted solutions to the poverty problem.
Serving in Greenville
• Serve the community through labor-intensive construction projects.
• We recommend bringing an adult-to-student ratio of 1-to-5 for this site.
• This site is a construction site. Adults with construction experience/knowledge will be beneficial; however, we cannot guarantee the projects in a given week will lend themselves to a specific trade. We work closely with the community to help us determine the projects we do throughout the summer.
• Because of the relational nature of these projects, students will remain at the same service sites through the week.
You and your youth will have the opportunity to build relationships with residents of Greenville while serving through completing meaningful construction projects. We rely on community partners to help us connect with real needs for hands-on labor. These more labor-intensive projects will give your students the opportunity to let their faith reach their fingertips while also interacting with the same service partner throughout the entire week. Every evening, you’ll get to experience and learn about community through different activities, including hosting a community cookout.
Summer 2017 will be our first season serving in Greenville, and we are excited to build a strong foundation in the community.
