About Daytona Beach
The white sands and ocean breezes of Daytona Beach, located on Florida’s Atlantic coast, make it a popular tourist destination for beach seekers. Daytona Beach is also well known for hosting motor sports events, including its annual Bike Week and the Daytona 500. But vacationers who only get to experience Beachfront Avenue and International Speedway Boulevard can easily overlook the realities of everyday life in this community – both the beauty and the brokenness. This beach city’s wide variety of people include many low-income families struggling to keep up with the high cost of living, and the mild weather makes Daytona Beach a draw for a large homeless population as well.
Serving in Daytona Beach
• Partner with local organizations to meet ongoing needs in the community.
• During the week, students may serve all or part of the week at a food shelf, clothing distribution center, soup kitchen, children’s program, or elderly care facilities.
During a week in Daytona Beach, your group will have the opportunity to get a fuller experience of this community than most tourists will ever experience. You’ll serve and get to know seniors, children, people who are homeless or in transition, and adults with special needs. YouthWorks also partners with some great local organizations that are committed to serving Daytona Beach on an ongoing basis. Your group will have the chance to join these partners in communicating love and hope to this community. In the evenings, you’ll explore more of the Daytona Beach community, including visiting the beach, attending a local church service, and enjoying a community cookout.
YouthWorks has been serving in Daytona Beach since 2005 when we were invited to the community by the church that remains our housing partner. Community organizations have come to love and appreciate the yearly presence of YouthWorks participants.
