About Blue Ridge Mountains

Your group will experience the great beauty of both nature and community in the scenic small towns that surround the Blue Ridge Mountains of North Carolina. By serving through working with children, painting, yard work and supporting local ministries, you’ll make connections with the people of the area. In the evenings, your group will explore the great outdoors and spend time learning about the Rutherford County area through a local community speaker. YouthWorks has served in North Carolina since 2006 but moved the Blue Ridge site to Rutherford County, NC in summer 2021.

Please note: All information regarding service and community engagement activities are subject to change.

Serving in Blue Ridge Mountains

  • Partner with local organizations to meet ongoing needs in the community by serving at a food pantry, clothing distribution center, meal center or local youth program.
  • Serve through community beautification projects, gardening, painting, yard work or assisting with simple work projects.
  • During the week, students may serve at one or more of the service options by switching mid-week between service partnerships and minor home repair projects.
  • Since some partnerships are in rural areas of Blue Ridge, groups may drive up to 45 minutes for service or evening activities.

Did you know?

The distinctive hue that inspired the mountain range’s name comes from the incredible amount of vegetation in the region. The trees release hydrocarbons such as isoprene, which interacts with other molecules in the atmosphere to create the blue haze that envelopes the Blue Ridge Mountains. The landscpae of the Bue Ridge spans 8 states: Pennyslvania, Maryland, Virgina, West Virginia, North Carolina and Georgia, with the longest portion being in West Virginia.
