About Adirondack Mountains
The Adirondack Mountains of northeastern New York are home to several small towns and villages, all of which are popular vacation destinations for residents of the bustling big cities in the area. The Adirondacks offer scenic beauty and countless opportunities for outdoor recreation. Our YouthWorks community is in the town of Warrensburg, which calls itself the “Gateway to the Adirondacks.” This is a historic and beautiful area with rivers, creeks, green trees, and hills. Warrensburg is known as home to the World’s Largest Garage Sale, and also the place where the novel “The Last of the Mohicans” (later turned into a screenplay) was written. However, the quaint charm of Warrensburg and other local towns like it that make this such a popular vacation destination hide the realities of daily life for those who live there year-round. Many struggle with poverty and economic insecurity.
Serving in Adirondack Mountains
- Serve through painting, cleaning, yard work or other simple work projects.
- Plan and lead kids programming for children in the community, including Bible lessons, games, crafts and reading.
- During the week, students may serve at one or more of the above service options. Note that Kids Club does not start until the third week of June, so service before that point will focus primarily on work projects.
In Warrensburg, you and your group will enjoy a rural wilderness experience while serving with local children’s ministries, community gardens, and helping with home repair projects. Local churches that YouthWorks partners with are commited to supporting kids in their community. They collect food donations to help provide meals for Kids Club. In September, they use the school supplies donated from YouthWorks groups to hold a community-wide event for students and families where they distribute them, connect families with health services, and show the town that the church cares for them. In addition to Kids Club, another favorite service site is the Priory Retreat Center, run by long-time YouthWorks friends who have a heart for service. Some adult leaders have enjoyed their time here so much that they returned for personal retreats in the fall. In the evenings, you will have the opportunity to experience the beauty of the Adirondack Mountains. Whether it’s hiking in the woods owned by community friends or a night at Natural Stone Bridges and Caverns, you’ll be amazed by God’s creation. You will also have a chance to cool off in Lake George at Million Dollar Beach. As the week comes to an end, you’ll share a meal with neighbors and friends at a community cookout.
YouthWorks has been serving towns in the Adirondacks since 2007. We have housed in a number of towns across Warren County, but Warrensburg has been home for several summers now. Local youth have been going on YouthWorks trips to other communities in the East since 2010. This is a community that loves YouthWorks and eagerly desires its presence here.
