We are very excited to announce the recipients of the 1K Challenge!

Thank you to all who submitted applications.

We are encouraged on how you are serving your home communities!

Blessings to you as you continue your initiatives!

Calvary Lutheran Church (Grand Forks, ND)

This group’s initiative, “Crews for Christ” is a plan for three work crews to target three types of needs – the first is a labor crew, taking care of home and yard needs; the second is for people who can be encouraged through fellowship; and the third is a ministry for children, similar to their Kid’s Club experience. They have organized themselves into three rotating crews to meet these needs.

First Baptist Church of Keene (Keene, NH)

This student group has named their initiative “ A Place at the Table” based on their theme verse, Matthew 25:40. They will purchase and decorate chairs and sell them for funds to donate to local shelters and charities. Each chair will include a card that explains the mission of the project, including the theme verse.

First Presbyterian Church – Junior Disciples (Harrisburg, IL)

This group has already begun work with a local homeless shelter. This initiative will not only have students doing traditional volunteer work, but they will also “adopt” rooms within the shelter. They will paint and decorate these rooms, working to make the shelter a home, thus attempting to address not only the physical needs, but the emotional needs as well.

Imagine Ministries (Fitzgerald, GA)

Inspired by the YouthWorks summer theme of “Imagine,” this group will be working directly with their local Department of Family and Children Services to remodel homes for the low income and the elderly in their community.

Oak Knoll Lutheran Church (Minnetonka, MN)

This group is developing a weekly neighborhood youth event at the church. They are intending to reach out to those living in low income apartments in the neighborhoods surrounding the church for a time of fellowship, fun, and spiritual guidance.

Petitcodiac Baptist Church (Petitcodiac, New Brunswick, Canada)

The group has identified groups of teenagers whose needs in their community are not currently being assisted by other programs in their area. They are targeting specifically 3 groups: teens in school living on their own; teens working to support their families, and teens with children of their own.

Presbyterian Homes & Family Services (Lynchburg, VA)

This group of students has developed a highly detailed plan for winterizing homes for their lower income neighbors. The plan includes determining the most cost and energy efficient way to meet the need, specific to each home.

Shepherd King Lutheran Church – Mother Mary’s (Lubbock, TX)

The group has identified that their community has a very high teen pregnancy rate. They are going to be dealing specifically with meeting needs of those specific young women, by supplying some basic items as well and directing them towards other services.

Shepherd of the Valley (Apple Valley, MN)

The students are developing a Kid’s Club, similar to the one they had on in their YouthWorks experience. Their Kid’s Club will be held at their local shelter where they will provide Christ-centered skits, music and other activities.

Spring Valley Youth Group – Congregational Church (Spring Valley, WI)

Once a month, the youth will hold a kid’s afternoon at the school where they will run activities. At the same time, they will also have the local movie theater open to the parents for free, so they can have an afternoon away from the kids, without any additional expense.
