Rapid City, South Dakota is a place of adventure and awe-inspiring beauty. The town is the gateway to the Black Hills where you’ll enjoy scenic drives, waterfalls, wildlife and the world’s highest concentration of public parks, monuments and memorials. As visitors seek out the local attractions, however, it’s easy to miss the areas of poverty within this community. Your group will give special attention to Rapid City’s economically struggling residents by ministering to children and the elderly, and by reaching out to the homeless with the love of Christ.

Demographics
Rapid City lies on the eastern edge of South Dakota’s legendary Black Hills. Founded in 1876 by prospectors in search of gold, today the city is home to 62,167 residents. Millions of tourists pass through each year, making their way to attractions such as the Crazy Horse Memorial, Black Hills National Forest, Custer State Park and Mt. Rushmore. For some residents of the community, however, the beautiful backdrop of the city does little to cover their financial struggles. About 12.7 percent of the population lives below the poverty line, including 17.6 percent under age 18 and 7 percent age 65 or over. In addition, there are over 1,000 homeless individuals in the state, and many more who have only temporary shelter. Come to Rapid City for a life-changing experience. You’ll be blessed by this friendly community as you serve.
About the Ministry
Participants serve in a variety of ways during a YouthWorks mission trip. Students may spend all week at one ministry or switch between ministries during the week. Our goal is to partner with local organizations and programs that seek to address the very basic needs of residents. Students may serve at places like: Children’s Programs, Elderly Centers, Soup Kitchens/Homeless Shelters and Thrift Stores. We cannot confirm until all groups arrive exactly what ministries your students will be a part of during the week. We ask that you come with a willing and flexible spirit!
Activities
Evening activities during a YouthWorks week are designed to give participants insight into the lives of local residents and the culture of the area. A list of evening/cultural activities we have done in the past include: visit Mount Rushmore; observe a Lakota drum group and dancers; go to Canyon Lake Park; and attend a community cookout. These are examples of what your group might partake in during your mission week. These examples are subject to change due to weather or availability. In case of change, suitable substitutes will be provided. We try to arrange for free evening activities, but from time to time, an additional cost may be required for an activity. Due to the nature of the evening activities that we will participate in, each person and/or group will need to bring additional money (around $20 per person). Details will be confirmed closer to your trip.
