  Lynn / Boston

Grades: 9 to 12

The Boston area is home to historic neighborhoods, prestigious colleges and universities and several sports and recreation opportunities. In nearby Lynn, Massachusetts, visitors enjoy hiking and biking in area parks and exploring the beautiful coastline. While Lynn offers big-city conveniences, there also are big-city struggles, including poverty and homelessness. Your group will partner with many local ministries to serve at homeless shelters and reach out to the children and elderly in the city of Lynn with the love of Jesus Christ.

Demographics

As one of America’s oldest cities (founded in 1630), Boston is on the forefront of American history. The city is bordered by Boston Harbor, just west of the Atlantic Ocean. Seven miles north of Boston is the city of Lynn. An early-American industrial center, many of the industrial buildings have now been converted into housing for some of the 89,050 residents of the city. The racial makeup of Lynn is primarily white (75 percent), African-American (12 percent) and Asian (6 percent). Today, many Lynn residents face economic challenges. Fifty-three percent of the population is considered low-income. Lynn also has the fourth highest number of homeless individuals in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. The number of homeless persons in shelters or on the street increased by 52 percent during the 1990s. Come alongside the residents of the exciting city of Lynn to learn more about the needs here and serve with hard work and enthusiasm.

About the Ministry

Participants serve in a variety of ways during a YouthWorks mission trip. Students may spend all week at one ministry or switch between ministries during the week. Students may participate in a Kids Club and partnering with local organizations. Kids Club is a hands-on program led by your youth offering high-energy games, crafts, skits, songs and interactive lessons all designed to help kids learn about Jesus. Our goal is to partner with local organizations and programs that seek to address the very basic needs of residents. Students may serve at places like: Children’s Programs, Elderly Centers, Soup Kitchens/Homeless Shelters and Thrift Stores. We cannot confirm until all groups arrive exactly what ministries your students will be a part of during the week. We ask that you come with a willing and flexible spirit!

Activities

Evening activities during a YouthWorks week are designed to give participants an insight into the lives of local residents and the culture of the area. A list of evening/cultural activities we have done in the past include: ride the “T” (subway) into Greater Boston and visit the Boston Commons; visit Nahant Beach; eat dinner at the Salem Mission or My Brother’s Table; visit Gloucester Beach. These are examples of what your group might partake in during your mission week. These examples are subject to change due to weather or availability. In case of change, suitable substitutes will be provided. We try to arrange for free evening activities, but from time to time, an additional cost may be required for an activity. Please plan to bring an additional $10 per person to cover any extra costs. We will confirm the details closer to your trip.

Ministry Week

Kids Club (beginning end of June) and Partnering with Local Ministries.

Mileage

Lynn is approximately 15 minutes from Logan International Airport, located in the heart of Boston proper.

Transportation & Travel

Each group is responsible for transportation to and from the site, and during the mission week. Lynn can only accommodate standard 15 passenger vans or smaller and cannot accommodate trailers. Due to Vicarious Liability Laws, you may not be able to rent 12 or 15 passenger vans in Massachusetts, or in other states to be driven in Massachusetts. Please check with your insurance provider and rental company for information.

Additional Information

Do know that the ministries that we partner with are in Lynn. The only experience that groups will have in Boston is during one of the evening activities.
