Demographics
The Yakama Reservation is located in south central Washington, to the east of the Cascade Mountain Range and Mt. Rainier National Park. It covers 1,300,000 acres and is home to the 14 tribes and bands that make up the Yakama Nation. At present, there are approximately 10,000 enrolled members in the tribe. Mt. Adams serves as the backdrop for the overflowing fruit orchards of apples, cherries, apricots, peaches and other flowering trees located throughout the reservation. This region has been affectionately nicknamed by some as the "Fruit Bowl of the Nation." However, extreme poverty is still prevalent in the midst of these economically thriving farms. A growing number of migrant workers are settling here in search of a better life bringing a greater demand for work, with increasing numbers of people seeking viable, sustainable employment. More and more people are struggling on a daily basis for their economic survival. Your group will have an opportunity for an incredible cultural experience and chance to serve.
About the Ministry
We focus on two primary areas of ministry: children and home improvement. Our work with children consists of a hands-on afternoon program led by your youth, known as Kids Club. Kids Club offers high-energy games, crafts, skits, songs and interactive lessons all designed to help kids come to know Jesus. Also during the week, your group will have the opportunity to do home improvement. Your group’s willingness to refresh a worn out exterior of a house with a new coat of paint brings real hope and an opportunity to share the love of Christ. Depending on the maturity and ratio of junior high to senior high students, most participants will spend two days doing each activity. If youth leaders feel a junior high student is not mature enough to paint homes, or there are not enough senior high students and adults to partner alongside them, then some junior high students may participate in Kids Club all week. Your Site Director will make the final decision, in conjunction with trip leaders. Adult leaders will separate youth into ministry groups, and the youth in your group will be mixed with the youth from other groups for the week. We ask that you come to serve with a willing and flexible spirit.
Activities
Evening activities during a YouthWorks week are designed to give participants insight into the lives of local residents and the culture of the area. A list of evening/cultural activities we have done in the past include: Tour the Imperial’s Garden – a local fruit tree farm; and a community Bar-B-Q. These are examples of what your group might partake in during your mission week. These examples are subject to change due to weather or availability. In case of change, suitable substitutes will be provided.
Ministry Week
