Demographics
Appalachia is the area of the eastern seaboard covered by the Appalachian Mountains, stretching from northern Maine to the northern parts of Alabama and Georgia. While it is an uncommonly wealthy region in natural resources such as coal, oil and timber, its residents are economically poor. One primary cause for this is that the people of Appalachia have little ownership of the resources. In the 80 counties that make up the heart of Appalachia, 72% of the land and 80% of the mineral rights are absentee-owned. This provides little opportunity to consistent income for the Appalachian people. We will be working in Logan – a small town of about 1,600 people that was founded in 1824 and is the county seat of Logan County. Logan has some of the highest rates of teen pregnancy, unemployment and food stamp usage in the area. The people of Logan have deep roots and a great pride in their community, but also feelings of hopelessness to improve their community.
About the Ministry
We focus on two primary areas of ministry: children and home improvement. Our work with children consists of a hands-on afternoon program led by your youth, known as Kids Club. Kids Club offers high-energy games, crafts, skits, songs and interactive lessons all designed to help kids learn about Jesus. Work projects include minor home repair and painting projects. Your group’s willingness to refresh a worn out exterior of a house with a new coat of paint brings real hope and an opportunity to share the love of Christ. In Logan, your group may also have the chance to help do more intense work projects and, if the need arises, help with flood relief. The ministry work we do in Appalachia is different from our other mission sites. Because the process of building relationships is of the utmost importance this region, your youth will work in one area of ministry for the entire week. Adult leaders will separate youth into ministry groups, and the youth in your group will be mixed with the youth from other groups for their week of service. Due to multiple church groups and varying needs of the community, we cannot confirm until all groups arrive on site exactly what service your youth will be involved with. We ask that you come to serve with a willing and flexible spirit.
Activities
Evening activities during a YouthWorks week are designed to give participants insight into the lives of local residents and the culture of the area. A list of evening/cultural activities we have done in the past include: Evening at Chief Logan State Park; Poverty Educational Discussion; Attend a Bluegrass concert; and take part in a community cookout. These are examples of what your group might partake in during your mission week. These examples are subject to change due to weather or availability. In case of change, suitable substitutes will be provided.
Ministry Week
Youth will work in one area of ministry for the entire week: Work Projects or Kids Club.
Mileage
Logan is one hour and 15 minutes southwest from Charleston, WV.
